What You Will Do

Assumes accountability for providing leadership and direction of day-to-day operations associated w/ direct resident care in WVCW Residential Programs. Implements and modifies systems that ensure compliance w/ state and federal regulations as well as consistency between facilities. Provides clinical supervision of WRH Staff RNs, Lead RNs of PGH and JH, and provides administrative supervision of the ACT RN. Oversees the daily duties of med staff and HSCs. Provides and assigns pertinent training. Attends leadership, supervisory, residential, and Comagine meetings, biweekly OCBH meetings, and pertinent conferences. Performs documentation audits for all houses. When needed, participates in interviews for RN/med staff for all houses, provides RN coverage for PGH and JH, and assumes the duties of the RN Care Coordinator/Lead RN. Provides on-call coverage on a 3 week rotation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assigns and reviews the work of RN's, Health Service Coordinators, and medication aides
  • Creates and provides trainings for medical staff
  • Directs and supervises training of RN's and medication aides
  • Delegates to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) and supervises delegated UAP
  • Audits documentation and records, tracks medication errors, directs the implementation of corrective action
  • Acts as a liaison between facility medical staff, community partners, and WVCW Leadership
  • Proactively addresses issues and concerns with community partners
  • Ensures residential facility compliance with federal and state regulations within the area of responsibility
  • Adheres to budgetary constraints
  • Interviews RN candidates, evaluates performance, implements disciplinary and corrective action for nursing and medical staff
  • Communicates changes to nursing services and clinic activities to Administrators; confers with staff to review and revise policies and procedures; develops and implements policies, procedural program objectives; maintains and writes updates to the department policy and procedures
  • Promotes a work environment that promotes retention of staff and where staff input is encouraged, listened to, and responded to
  • Provides prompt assessment and intervention as appropriate when problems or issues arise both with residents and staff
  • Provides support to RN's and medical staff regarding client medical needs
  • Provides guidance to staff during crisis situations
  • Utilizes TeamStepps for communication
  • Prepares and maintains timely, concise and complete patient and staff records
  • Works collaboratively with the residents' care team, including pharmacy, psychiatrists, therapists, case managers, guardians, and medical providers
  • Provides QMHP services as needed
  • Works as part of the WVCW Leadership Team as an advocate for residents and medical staff
  • Participates in education programs designed to keep the community informed, knowledgeable, and involved in the activities and programs of the facility

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Two or 4 year nursing degree from an accredited institution with a BSN preferred
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Oregon
  • Three years of nursing management experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Community Based Care settings in Oregon is strongly preferred
  • Background in compliance and/or procedure writing desirable
  • Additional education, experience, or certification in social work, psychology, psychiatric nursing, or other related fields is desirable
  • Valid Oregon driver's license
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Current CPR and Food Handler's certification (to be obtained as soon as possible on hiring)

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of effective employee supervision, development, and evaluation
  • Knowledge of psychiatric nursing treatment and psychotherapeutic interventions, laws and regulations pertaining to psychiatric nursing; the uses and effects of psychotropic drugs and narcotics
  • Knowledge of theories, techniques, and practices of professional nursing; principles, practices, and laws of professional nursing; basic occupational therapy social work; patient safety practices
  • Knowledge of comprehensive community mental health services, including the interaction of all mental health disciplines to both psychiatry and primary care
  • Demonstrates ability and desire to work with people with mental illness; understands the behavior of people under stress, demonstrates knowledge of co-occurring disorders, has knowledge of common forms of mental illness and the treatment of these disorders
  • Must have effective communication skills, both oral and written and be able to develop cooperative working relationships with staff, clients, their families, health care providers, administrator and the community
  • Must be able to maintain relationships with and work collaboratively with health care providers, law enforcement agencies, the court, public and private administrators, and the community in general
  • Demonstrates exceptional computer literacy utilizing multiple software programs
  • Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills
  • This position requires the handling of highly confidential information. Must adhere to rules and laws pertaining to client confidentiality, and HIPAA regulations

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Professional and personal skills to cope with stress associated with work involving a high degree of mental, emotional and physical demands.
  • While performing delegated tasks of nursing, this position will require fine motor skills and sufficient vision to maintain accuracy.
  • Use office automation including computer and phone systems that require fine manipulation, grasping, typing and reaching.
  • Able to sit for several hours while documenting, auditing, working with clients, reviewing reports and other written materials, and talking on the phone.
  • This position may occasionally be required to stand; stoop, kneel or crouch, climb or balance, and lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Infection control and universal precautions must be maintained to ensure disease will not be spread or contracted.
  • Ability to self-regulate volume of voice to ensure confidentiality and to decrease unwanted stimuli in the RTF.

Work is performed in both an office environment and a residential environment. The noise level is usually moderate, but occasionally may be exposed to loud noise such as raised voice levels and alarms.

This position may be exposed to the everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as an office (i.e., moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, and electrical shock).
