Headquartered in Wallowa County, we strive to help communities throughout Northeast Oregon balance rural economic well-being with the stewardship and conservation of their resources, preserving each rural area’s heritage of making a living from the land. https://www.wallowaresources.org/ JOB SUMMARY The Wallowa Canyonlands Partnership (WCP) is a WR program that provides weed control management to reduce the impact of noxious weeds in Northeast Oregon and Southeast Washington. With public and private partners, WCP staff monitors and manages weed infestations in the rugged, remote, and steep Canyonlands of the Snake River watershed and some of its tributaries, including the Grande Ronde and Imnaha Rivers. The Field Technician will receive necessary education and training to contribute to the Wallowa Canyonlands Partnership field activities. The Field Technician will work with WCP staff, agency partners, and landowners to implement weed management across jurisdictional boundaries. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide support to all weed control activities for the Wallowa Canyonlands Partnership. This will include overnight trips, rafting, hiking long distances over rough terrain, carrying packs weighing over 50 lbs., working alone in remote locations, and mixing and applying herbicide by backpack or ATV sprayers. • Navigate to field sites using a handheld GPS, maps and recording daily tracklogs. • Implement effective weed control programs with private and public partners using integrative weed management techniques in the WCP program area. Activities will include chemical treatments, contract oversight, and biological control releases all in rugged and very remote terrain. • Manage field equipment and supplies including vehicles, ATV, herbicides, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), other equipment, and storage facilities. Maintains current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). • Regularly reports all field activities to the WCP Program Manager and collaborates closely with WCP staff and partners to ensure high quality implementation of noxious weed management. • Collects ecological data for all treatment sites and works with WCP staff to accurately integrate information into program databases • Data collection, input, management and analysis. • Maintains clear communication with all partners and landowners. • Responds to landowner requests, needs and requirements by providing various products and services. • Provides input for educational and outreach materials and potential research projects. • Periodically shadows the WCP Manager and other staff or partners to build an understanding of natural resource program operations, contracting and reporting. EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES The following are the minimum levels required to successfully perform the Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities. • A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Post-high school education or experience in the natural resource field is preferred. • Good communication skills and strong work ethic. • Experience living and working in remote places and the ability to creatively troubleshoot in remote environments. • A valid Oregon Driver’s License and the ability to be insured by Wallowa Resources’ Insurance. (Note: If under 21, applicant must have 2 year’s driving experience and a clean driving record). • Must maintain appropriate licenses through the Oregon Department of Agriculture and other licensing agencies. Training will be provided to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license within the first 2 months of employment (must be 18 years or older to hold an ODA Applicators license). • Must consistently demonstrate teamwork and positive day-to-day work relationships and interactions with staff, board members, members of the public, and community stakeholders. • Must be able to lift, push, pull, carry, and move field and spray equipment in excess of 50 lbs. WORKING CONDITIONS Environment and Physical Requirements: The Field Technician will receive initial training in an office setting as well as extensive training in the field. This position regularly requires work in state parks, National forests, farms, ranches and other rugged remote locations. These locations are subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions including heat, rain, snow, wind, and dust. The field technician will work around or operate a variety of equipment that may include ATVs, 4-wheel drive trucks, and rafts. The position will be required to carry heavy loads in excess of 50 lbs, sometimes over long distances in very rugged terrain. The Field Technician interacts constantly with staff, visitors, program participants, government agencies, and others and is expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times while working for Wallowa Resources. Hours: Typical office hours are full time from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday. The Field Technician also travels extensively and may be required to work extended hours. This may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Scheduling time off is permitted only with reasonable advanced notice and is at the discretion of the WCP Program Manager.
