ORGANIZATION SUMMARY Wallowa Resources (WR) is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1996, with leadership from Wallowa County Commissioners. Since then, WR has worked to bring people together to empower rural communities to create strong economies and healthy landscapes through land stewardship, education, and job creation. We strive to balance rural economic well-being with the stewardship and conservation of its resources, preserving each rural area’s heritage of making a living from the land. JOB SUMMARY The Communication Intern will be responsible for enhancing our communication outreach efforts. The Communication Intern will enhance our communication efforts by developing our monthly newsletter, maintaining our website & social media presence, and assisting with community events and WR publications. They will assist in maintaining Wallowa Resources’ website by writing feature stories, updating the calendar, and capturing photos of our work. The Communications Intern will also assist with functions such as, but not limited to, social media-related tasks, newsletter platforms, idea generation & brainstorming sessions, image sourcing, note-taking/journalism, organizing archives, and field photos. The Communications Manager and the Events and Volunteer Coordinator will work closely with the intern to help them achieve their learning and career goals and gain experience by designing a plan for success together, with applicable action items. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ● Writing: In alignment with our mission and values, create inspiring short stories and program updates that can be used for local media, website, social media, story maps, and media outlets in coordination with the Communications Manager, WR program staff, and partners that reflect WR’s approved brand identity, strategy, parameters, and style guidelines. ● Events: Help coordinate the Woodlands & Watershed Festival, the Barn Dance, pub talks, and strategic initiative events. ● Design: Assist in designing templates and compiling information for print media, program updates, storytelling, communication plans, annual reports, capital campaigns, and strategic plans. ● Website & Social Media: Assist in managing WR’s websites (Squarespace) and work with WR staff to keep content up-to-date. 401 NE 1 st St, Suite A, Enterprise, OR 97828 www.wallowaresources.org | 541-426-8053 COMMUNITY | EDUCATION | STEWARDSHIP ● Newsletters: Works with the Communications Manager to produce monthly electronic newsletters and any additional email campaigns needed to support events, fundraisers, and special announcements. ● Multimedia: Works with the Communications Manager and education staff to collect images & source information that support communications ● Cross-Program support as needed, specifically with the Youth Education Stewardship Program. EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES The following are the minimum levels required to successfully perform the Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities. ● Experience & knowledge for natural resources or a social science related to natural resources or environmental education ● Experience and/or interest in marketing, social media, website curation, communications, and design. ● Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ease in communicating complex concepts in a clear, effective fashion for a general audience. Sensitivity to cultural differences. ● Experienced in photography & photo editing. ● Good computer skills, including Adobe-based programs, Klaviyo, Meta Business Suite, and Canva. ● High enthusiasm and a team player attitude. ● Ability to use computers and mobile devices with a broad range of design and communication software and social media platforms. ● A valid Oregon Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record according to WR’s auto liability policy requirements. ● Ability to pass a pre-employment background check. ● Must consistently demonstrate teamwork and positive day-to-day work relationships and interactions with staff, program participants, parents, members of the public, and community stakeholders. WORKING CONDITIONS Environment and Physical Requirements: The Communications Intern works in an office and outdoor environment. Those outdoor locations are subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and dust. The position frequently requires daily car travel, with occasional overnight travel. The Communications Intern interacts constantly with staff, visitors, program participants, parents, government agencies, and others. The position requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, and moving intermittently during working hours. The incumbent must be able to lift, push, pull, and move files and equipment in excess of 25 pounds. Hours: The Communications Intern will work 15-20 hours per week, with some remote work. Typical office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm. Monday through Friday.
