School Garden Education Focus with Cale Nicholson
Cale Nicholson, Garden Program Specialist with the Delta Garden Study in Marshall, Arkansas, will be visiting Wallowa County on March 21. Cale will tour several school gardens and share information on garden education, Farm to School, and growing food for use in school cafeterias. The Delta Garden Study is measuring the impact of school gardens on youth fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, academic achievement and school bonding. From 2010-2013, Delta Garden Study has implemented seven school garden programs in Arkansas. Anyone interested is invited to attend a potluck and presentation on Thursday, March 21 at 12:00 noon at Community Connection in Enterprise. The Wallowa County Food System Council is sponsoring Nicholson’s visit with support from Oregon Rural Action and The Magic Garden Project of the Joseph United Methodist Church. The Wallowa County Food System Council includes farmers, ranchers and consumers, as well as representatives of Slow Food Wallowas, Wallowa County Farmers Market, Lower Valley Farmers Market, the Magic Garden, Community Connection, Junes’ Local Market and the Northeast Oregon Economic Development District.
