Wild Landscape – Minam
The Wild Landscape Exhibition – Minam
Opening Reception August 1 @ 7-9pm
Exhibit Open: 8/1-9/13
Submission Deadline: 6/30 midnight
Every year the Josephy Center celebrates Wallowa County’s natural beauty through a Wild Landscape Exhibit – this year we want to celebrate the beauty and the diverse landscape of Minam.
What is a wild landscape? One thing that makes Eastern Oregon so special is it’s untouched and undeveloped landscapes. We want to feature artwork that celebrates these diverse and wild lands. This means the landscape is the focal point – no human-made objects or structures should be visible in the art works.
Below, we have provided two maps created by artist Kolle Kahle Riggs to help artists explore and discover inspiring viewpoints for the Wild Landscapes: Minam exhibit. These maps highlight locations within the Minam region that showcase the area’s untamed beauty and diverse terrain—perfect starting points for your next work of art!
Curated and Judged by Nicole Freshley.

Nicole Freshley is a self taught painter based in Enterprise, Oregon. Using watercolor or oils she attempts to convey the expansiveness, calm, and beauty present in the landscapes of the West. She paints places she has a personal connection to: the mountains, prairie, and canyons of Eastern Oregon, and the Washington coast where she spent much of her youth. She often takes a small watercolor kit while backpacking and backcountry skiing (or a portable oils setup while in cow camp) to make plein air studies that work in tandem with her reference photographs to inform finished studio pieces. Her work balances intricate geographical detail with open space and rich blocks of color. Nicole spent two years living along the Minam River while working at the Minam River Lodge, a remote inholding in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, where she grew vegetables for the lodge restaurant.
