Tunesmith Night
Tunesmith Night is held every second Saturday, October through May, this monthly showcase of original music is an opportunity for songwriters to present their work to a supportive listening audience, sharing insights with the listeners and camaraderie with their fellow tunesmiths. The show is presented in a round-robin format, with each musician playing a song, then the next taking a turn, creating an interesting and varied performance. Doors open at 6pm, music at 7pm, all ages welcome. This month features: Simon Tucker, Joey Carper and Carolyn Lochert.
Simon Tucker came to Portland, Oregon from his hometown Lewiston, Idaho in 2011 to expand his music career, then 13 years in the making. Less than two years later, Tucker has performed at some of Portland's most renowned venues (Crystal Ballroom, Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, The Goodfoot, Mt. Tabor Theater, Laurelthirst Pub, Mississippi Studios, Horning's Hideout), and with some of its most respected players (Damian Erskine, Mike Snyder, Ben Darwish, Tyler Thompson, Russ Kleiner). Tucker artfully blend his roots in blues, soul, and gospel with more contemporary styles from the 60s onward, and performances highlight his virtuosic guitar skills, and soulful voice.
Joey Carper has been immersed in music all of his life. While still in high school, he played drums for the original rock-blues-Americana group The Alibis, and Wallowa County’s own heavy metal band Stone Orchard. He also drummed for Vice Verse Us, a rock group in Houston, Texas, and with Northwest favorites Bitterroot and Kory Quinn for their mash-up tours as Lowdown Whiskey Rebels. He started developing skills on guitar, experimenting with open tunings and intricate rhythms, adding vivid image-laden lyrics to that natural groove. His voice is full of passion, warmth and edge, and the depth of his writing belies his youthful age of twenty-four. Carper currently makes his home in Union, Oregon.
Carolyn Lochert's musical path has taken her from roots in a small North Dakota town growing up in a large musical family, through Flagstaff, Portland and Tucson - landing her in Corvallis where she studied jazz composition. She grew up with blues, soul, funk, rock, the music of Mexico and was introduced to jazz in her early twenties - all these influences can be heard in her original music. Two years ago she released her first cd, She's Lookin' Back.
