Sensory detail is at the heart of any work that moves us. This class focuses on the natural world, and how inspiration—be it a tiny clump of moss or the tallest redwood—can inspire our writing and make it jump off the page. You will learn how to infuse your pieces with the sights, smells, and sounds of nature. We will dive into examples, explore how natural description can work in genre and literary projects, and workshop our own in-class pieces.
This class is focused on short-form fiction, however, the use of sensory detail at any length will profoundly impact your writing. We will discuss how to immerse your stories with details that resonate. Nature not only provides a wealth of details to explore, but also metaphors that touch on love, longing, loss, and the human experience. Through this class you will find a deeper connection with your reader on both a universal and intimate level.
