About This Workshop
Bird lovers and clay enthusiasts alike are invited to join Josephy Center Director and ceramic artist Cheryl North Coughlan for this fun, two-part hand-building workshop.
In the first session, you’ll sculpt your own unique clay bird using hand-building techniques. Whether you’re inspired by a favorite backyard visitor or a majestic raptor, feel free to bring a reference photo of the species you’d like to create.
Once your bird is complete, you’ll begin a second functional project of your choice:
-
🪴 A hand-built bird bath
-
🏡 A decorative birdhouse
-
🌿 A functional bird feeder
No prior clay experience is necessary, making this class perfect for beginners as well as returning ceramic artists.
Session Two: Glaze & Finish
After your pieces have been bisque-fired, you’ll return to glaze and finish your artwork. Cheryl will guide you through the glazing process before everything heads back into the kiln for its final firing.
When your finished pieces are ready, you’ll be notified by phone or text for pickup.
All materials, tools, clay, glazing, and kiln firings are included in the class fee.
About the Instructor
Cheryl North Coughlan has been getting her hands dirty for 12 years — and she wouldn’t have it any other way. A devoted hand-builder with a soft spot for animals in clay, Cheryl brings the same curiosity and warmth to the classroom that she brings to her own studio practice. As Director of the Josephy Center for Arts & Culture, she’s found the perfect home for her belief that art belongs to everyone. When she’s not running the place, she’s probably coaxing a hippo or a bird out of a lump of sculptural clay.
