About This Workshop
Fine art printmaking is one of the most accessible and historically rich art forms — and one of the few where a single image can be shared as multiple affordable originals. Artists from Durer and Rembrandt to Wendy Red Star (Apsaalooke), Rick Bartow (Wiyot), and K’ila Farrell-Smith (Klamath Modoc) have all included printmaking in their practice.
In this two-day introductory workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of photopolymer etching using SolarPlate technology and non-toxic Akua soy-based ink. The process offers a fast track to a sophisticated result — no harsh chemicals, no prior printmaking experience required.
Over the course of the weekend, each student will create a single etching plate and produce multiple copies of a 6″ x 8″ image printed in one color on fine art paper (8″ x 10″, suitable for standard 10″ x 12″ mats and frames). Students who work quickly may be able to complete a second edition.
What You Will Learn
Students will be guided through the full photopolymer etching process, including creating a drawing on acetate film, preparing and exposing the SolarPlate, and printing using the Josephy Center’s 24″ x 48″ Takach press.
Materials covered include SolarPlate (a light-sensitive polymer plate that replaces the traditional copper plate), Akua ink (soy-based, cleans up with soap and water), and Arches 1618 heavyweight fine art paper.
Important: Come Ready to Print
Suggested but not required that students have an image ready to work from to save time deciding on the image. Your image should be sized at 6″ x 8″ and use high-contrast marks — think bold darks and clear whites, similar to a pen-and-ink drawing or high-contrast photograph. Instructors will be available to help you finalize and transfer your image onto acetate at the start of the workshop, but having a clear idea or reference ready will allow you to make the most of your time at the press.
If you are unsure what to bring, contact us before the workshop and we will help you prepare.
Pre-registration required. Minimum 6 students / maximum 8 students.
All supplies are included in the workshop fee.
Registration closes 48 hours prior to class start time.
*No refunds after registration closes, please plan accordingly.
