Pasture Management Gathering for Women Ranchers in NE Oregon
On June 22nd women ranchers from Baker, Union, and Wallowa counties are invited to gather at the Defrees Ranch near Baker City, Oregon for a day of community building and hands-on learning. The gathering is the third in a series of events aimed to give women in ranching additional tools to build ranch resilience through regenerative practices.
Participants will spend time at different parts of the ranch to discuss styles of pasture management (including timbered pastures), cover cropping, mitigating environmental challenges, and understanding soil health. Hosted by American Farmland Trust (AFT), Northeastern Oregon Economic Development District (NEOEDD) and other partners, the gathering is free, lunch is provided, and travel and childcare stipends are available. Registration is required.

"These gatherings are a great way to learn from each other and get ideas to help us overcome some of the hurdles we face in our businesses. I’m also looking forward to hearing from Leslie Michel, soil scientist and rancher from Central Washington, about her success integrating livestock grazing and cover crops to improve soil health and suppress weeds,” says Sara Miller, NEOEDD Deputy Director and first-generation rancher.
Ranchers in northeastern Oregon face pressures from drought conditions, including water stressed landscapes and wildfire activity. These conditions are increasingly common, making it crucial that ranchers have access to resources and community support to help navigate these challenges.
