Into the Wallowa Lecture: Grazing, Gardens, and Gold: W'al'wama Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
Into The Wallowa Evening Lecture. Relatively well-known aspects of Wallowa Native culture and history, cornhusk bags and the Nez Perce War of 1877, have their origins in the first agriculture and ranching in the Wallowa Valley, yet this aspect of history is often overlooked. Tim Nitz, Oregon/Washington Unit Manager of the Nez Perce National Historical Park, will explore how early non-native agriculture and animal husbandry were integrated into wal-wá-ma life to the extent that decisions leading up to the Nez Perce War were based upon continued protection of this additional economic resource.
