Flora School Days
Flora School, located in NE Oregon, began her journey as an institution of learning in September 1915. In order to be ready for the year-long birthday celebration, also starting in September 100 years later, the annual School Days celebration will take at least a one year hiatus while volunteers work to restore and repair the school.
School Days, a pioneer event celebrating old time skills, takes many volunteer hours in order to get ready for that one day, the first Saturday in June. Therefore, in order to enlist as many volunteers and get as much done as possible for the birthday celebration, the School Board and School Days Committee decided to hold work parties starting with the cleanup time based around School Days.
The work parties will start Thursday, June 5 through Sunday, June 8, generally 9am to 4pm. All types of restoration and repairs will be done at this work weekend: mudding sheetrock, painting, paint stripping, window glazing, sheetrock repairs, plaster repairs and more. As the year wears on, particular work parties will invite volunteers to learn particular skills, not needing any prior experience.
After the initial startup work party above, weekend work days will vary with each month according to what needs to be done and when. Every Thursday will be a workday at the school starting at 10am and working generally into the evening. Flora School’s website, www.floraschool.org, will have the work party schedule and subjects listed as much as possible with the dates.
