Flora School Day
Flora School Days has always been a celebration of old time skills and eats and now it will encompass old time contests and competitions. Along with the addition of more activities, the annual celebration, held the first Saturday in June, is changing its time frame. Saturday, June 2, the music, demonstrations and pie social will start at noon this year, with the “two-handed plate” of food from the Dutch oven lunch starting right around 1pm.
Blacksmith demonstrations at School Days have always been popular since the very beginning in 1999. This year there will be several smithies at work during the first annual competition for blacksmiths. All skill levels are welcome. There are three projects to be made during the time frame from noon to 5pm. Then the finished work will be judged (two judges have been selected, smiths themselves) and the finished work will be auctioned off.
Besides the blacksmith competition, two more contests will be added—age-old game of horseshoe pitching for two-member teams up to 8 teams and the first annual Camp Chili Cook-off. Pioneer games revolved around skills that were needed in those days or involved the use of the tools in a different manner, as in horseshoes. Rodeo came about due to the skills needed to run a ranch. Horseshoe pitching will start right around 12:30pm and chili cook-off at 2pm. More games are in the works for 2019.
Fly tying, fly shuttle weaving (no relation between the two) will be added to the demonstrations, while keeping the popular roping and music. The “smell zoo” will add yaks and chickens while still having pigs and horses. The farrier will once again be shoeing the horses and showing how to set them up as pack animals too. The Morse Code will still be a demo along with two new demonstrations of household chores—try ironing with a sadiron—and vegetable dyeing. Tours of the town, always popular, will be on the agenda along with butter making and grinding flour and corn.
