Brown Bag Lunch
“A Century of Women in Aviation,” with Steven Locke. Steven grew up here, wandered the world (he’s actually still wandering) and now teaches education at the University of Wyoming. He’s been driven to provide information to teachers and schools in small town Wyoming about doors open to girls in the big world, and, as he has a couple of brothers--Barney and Tim--who are professional pilots, he’s been putting together information on women in aviation. You might have seen an exhibit in a hanger at the Joseph Fly-in this summer. Well, he has more, and he has especially been gathering information on Bessie Halladay, who flew in China in the 30s, trained WW 2 pilots in Ontario, and operated a flying school in Joseph after the War! Anyone interested in flying, in Wallowa County history, and the struggles of women to gain professional jobs and recognition will want to make this one!
