Josephy Center Presents; Local Musicians with Songs About Horses
The Josephy Center for Arts and Culture and the Wallowa Valley Music Alliance are partnering on October 25th to present an evening of Songs and Stories of Horses as part of the month-long exhibit “The Year of the Horse” at the Josephy Center. The event will feature music readings and presentations bySara Miller & Mike Hale, Rodd Ambroson, Amy Zahm, Janis Carper & Carolyn Lochert, Heidi Muller & Bob Webb, and Emma Carlson.
Mike Hale and Sara Miller arrived in Wallowa County in 1981 for a ranch job in Hells Canyon. With the help of their children, they now own and operate Magpie Ranch, raising longhorn cattle and providing exceptionally delicious grass-finished beef for families in Wallowa County and Portland. They enjoy playing old time cowboy songs, dance music, and original tunes featuring banjo, guitar, concertina and voice. Hale and Miler will share songs inspired by the role of the horse in the everyday operations of cattle ranching.
Singer-songwriters Ambroson, Muller, Carper and Lochert will be performing original and cover songs featuring the horse as the focus, including favorites like the traditional Old Stewball, Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger, and the Rolling Stone’s Wild Horses. Emma Carlson, a senior at Enterprise High, will share stories from her recent three-week long horse packing trip through the Eagle Cap Wilderness with her dad. Wallowa County native Amy Zahm has had a lifelong love of horses and writing. She is currently working on her MFA at Eastern Oregon University and will read from some of her current work at Saturday’s event.
